Short Stand-Alone PV Systems
A standalone system does not have a connection to the electricity grid, and thus the generated power is stored and buffered with a battery. It is most suitable for locations such as remote villages, mountains, islands and base stations where it is difficult to access electricity. A charge controller may be incorporated in the system to avoid battery damage and to optimize the production of the cells or modules by maximum power point tracking (MPPT). In most applications, an inverter is needed to convert the stored energy in battery into AC electrical energy. Hence, the stand-alone PV system, in combination of battery and inverter, acts as a self-sufficient system that can provide independent energy supply for long periods of time.
